About an hour’s drive from Marina di Grosseto, among the gentle hills of the province of Siena, lies a unique and mysterious place: the Abbey of San Galgano. Its impressive roofless ruins, open to the sky, create a magical, almost timeless atmosphere. It is one of those places that leave a lasting impression, ideal for a day trip surrounded by nature, art, and legend.
Not far from the abbey, climbing the hill of Montesiepi, you reach a small circular hermitage where a sword embedded in the rock is kept. This is no fantasy: it is real, visible beneath a glass case. It was driven into the stone by Galgano Guidotti, a young knight who converted to faith and renounced violence to devote his life to prayer. This symbolic act of peace turned the site into a spiritual center, and Galgano was later proclaimed a saint.
The entire area, set within an extraordinary hilly landscape, is also perfect for those who enjoy photography, walking in nature, or simply being inspired by silence and beauty.
How to get there from Marina di Grosseto
- Distance: about 80 km Travel time: just over 1 hour
- Recommended route: from Marina di Grosseto, take the SS1 Aurelia northbound, exit at Roccastrada/Civitella Marittima, then continue toward Monticiano and finally Chiusdino, the village closest to the Abbey. Alternatively, take the SS223 toward Siena, exit at San Lorenzo a Merse and continue toward Monticiano.
Visitor tips
- The site is open year-round, but spring and autumn are the best seasons to enjoy the surrounding nature.
- It is advisable to arrive in the late afternoon to admire the golden light on the ruins and experience an even more evocative atmosphere.
- Wear comfortable shoes: the paths between the abbey and the hermitage are short but slightly uphill.
- Entrance fee: access to the abbey is paid (around €4–5); the Montesiepi hermitage with the sword can be visited free of charge.
- Nearby there are small restaurants and agriturismi where you can enjoy traditional Tuscan cuisine.
