The Maremma has always been a land suited to cycle tourism, and in recent years it has seen great growth in well-marked and mapped routes for those who love exploring on two wheels.
Since the 1970s, our roads have been chosen as training destinations by famous Italian and international cycling teams such as Marco Pantani’s Mercatone Uno, Saeco, and many others.
I still remember when, as a child, my father took me to meet Francesco Moser, who was training in Marina di Grosseto with his team to prepare for competitions.
Even today, a stretch of road in the area is known as “Salita del Pirata” (“The Pirate’s Climb”), in honor of Pantani.
Massimiliano “Max” Lelli is at home among the climbs of Manciano, while many other champions have covered countless kilometers on our roads — from the “Scala Santa” beneath Vetulonia to the Grosseto plain — routes chosen both for technical training and for their mild climate and spectacular landscapes.
