What to do in Marina di Grosseto, in the Maremma, when it rains

10 ideas for enjoying a special day even without the sea

A holiday in Marina di Grosseto immediately brings to mind images of sunshine, sea, pine woods and days spent outdoors. But what can you do when the weather changes and the rain prevents you from spending the day on the beach or enjoying outdoor activities?

The good news is that the Maremma offers many interesting alternatives even on less sunny days. In fact, bad weather can sometimes become the perfect opportunity to discover a different, more authentic side of the area: slower, more intimate and surprisingly rich in experiences.

If you are staying at Residence La Rosa di Nettuno, here are 10 ideas to enjoy a wonderful day even when it rains.

1. Discover the historic centre of Grosseto

Just a few minutes from Marina di Grosseto lies Grosseto, an elegant and pleasant city to visit in any season.

Take a walk along the ancient Medici Walls, explore the historic centre and stop in one of the many cafés under the arcades for a relaxing break. The Cathedral of San Lorenzo and the town’s central squares are always worth a visit. Also worth discovering are La Cantina in Piazza del Sale, Numero 9 in Via Aldobrandeschi and Via Galileo Galilei with its shops.

2. Visit the museums of the Maremma

A rainy day is perfect for dedicating some time to culture.

Among the museums not to be missed:

  • the Archaeological and Art Museum of the Maremma, ideal for discovering the Etruscan and Roman history of the area;
  • the Natural History Museum of the Maremma, also interesting for children;
  • the small museums of the historic villages, such as the Falchi Museum in Vetulonia, which will be a real surprise, and the MAGMA Museum in Follonica.

3. Treat yourself to a day at the thermal baths

If you are looking for relaxation and wellbeing, rain can almost become an advantage.

The famous Terme di Saturnia, with their natural warm waters, are a perfect destination to regenerate. You can choose the thermal park or the Cascate del Mulino, with their limestone pools and the “La Stellata” stream, where the warm waters flow and create a pleasant natural stream that can be enjoyed even in the height of summer.

Alternatively, the Terme di Petriolo offer an experience immersed in nature directly at the spring, or you can choose the small and very convenient thermal establishment.

A wonderful way to turn a grey day into a moment of pure wellbeing, perhaps also taking advantage of the excellent traditional restaurants in the inland area.

4. Take a food and wine tour among wineries and local producers

The Maremma is a land of great flavours, ideal for a day combined with the thermal baths — or enjoyed on its own.

A rainy day can become the perfect opportunity to:

  • visit a winery in the Morellino di Scansano or Montecucco di Cinigiano area. Not to be overlooked is the Cantina del Cristo, just 2 km from Marina, which has received national awards for its Ciliegiolo. A recent renovation has also transformed the shop into a tasting and sales area where you can sample both wines and local products;
  • taste a glass of Morellino di Scansano;
  • try local extra virgin olive oil, as we are in a full PDO production area;
  • discover cheeses, cured meats and typical products not only from the land but also from the sea, such as our bottarga, tuna crumbs and other products from the fishermen’s cooperatives of Orbetello and San Leopoldo.

These are all flavours to discover — and even 100 pages would not be enough to list them all.

An authentic experience that tells the true soul of the territory.

5. Visit the most beautiful medieval villages in the area

Even in the rain, the villages of the Maremma retain all their charm.

We recommend:

  • Massa Marittima, with its beautiful medieval square;
  • Scansano, home of excellent wine, with a stop in Pereta and Magliano in Toscana, where you can walk along the historic walls and visit the home of Morellino;
  • Vetulonia, rich in Etruscan history, with a stop in Buriano before reaching it, and Tirli, passing beneath the chestnut trees as if you were in the mountains, before descending again from Pian d’Alma towards the sea.

Among stone alleys, artisan workshops and small traditional taverns, time will fly.

6. Enjoy a shopping break

Rainy days are also perfect for a bit of slow shopping.

Among markets, local shops and traditional boutiques, you can take home an authentic memory of your holiday: ceramics, food products, wines or Tuscan handicrafts.

7. Discover local flavours with a gourmet break

Why not turn the day into a small gastronomic journey?

Try a typical Maremman trattoria and let yourself be won over by:

  • Maremman tortelli, pappardelle with wild boar or spaghetti with clams;
  • acquacotta or small fish soups;
  • Chianina or Maremman beef tagliata;
  • traditional desserts.

Rain is much easier to enjoy with a good lunch.

8. A family day? Perfect activities for children too

If you are travelling with children, a day without the beach can still be fun.

Interactive museums, board games, reading, films or a special snack in your apartment can become precious moments to enjoy together.

A few board games and some local products to cook can turn into a fun family experience.

And having a fully equipped kitchen available makes everything even easier.

9. Enjoy the comfort of your apartment

Sometimes a holiday also means slowing down.

At Residence La Rosa di Nettuno, every apartment is designed to offer independence and comfort:

  • prepare a hot tea;
  • choose and browse a book from our bookcases on the ground floor near reception;
  • cook with local products bought at the market;
  • walk among the historic photographs in the corridors of the residence or visit the small gallery by artist Dnai Gkoni between the second and third floors;
  • or simply relax while it rains outside.

It can all become a small luxury.

10. Remember that in the Maremma the sun always returns

In Tuscany, the weather often changes quickly. A grey morning can turn into a sunny afternoon.

Take advantage of the pause to slow down… and get ready to return to the beach as soon as the blue sky appears again.

A beautiful holiday in any weather

The Maremma knows how to surprise in every season and in every kind of weather. Even a rainy day can offer authentic emotions, new discoveries and unexpected moments of relaxation.

And when you return to your apartment at Residence La Rosa di Nettuno, you will probably think that, after all, a little rain was not such a bad idea.
