Built in 1788 at the request of the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, Forte San Rocco was intended to control the coastline and defend the salt pans from pirate raids and smugglers.
At the time, its armed terrace, equipped with artillery pieces, overlooked the sea directly, and the waves likely lapped against the walls of the fort.
Once construction was completed, the fort was instead assigned as a health outpost for the coastal area, as pirate activity had shifted to other seas.
Still well preserved today, it is one of the historic symbols of the town. While restoration of the interior is still underway to allow visits, the site offers an ideal setting for cultural activities held during the summer in the square behind the fort. It hosts the San Rocco Festival, featuring theatrical performances, concerts, and dance shows, with the evocative backdrop of the fort serving as the stage scenery.
